First Annual Memorial Lecture: Delivered by Professor Dominic Lieven

Date: Category: Event

On the occasion of Hari’s 69th birthday, the first birthday that was commemorated without him, a lecture in his memory was delivered online on the evening of Friday, February 12, 2021, by Professor Dominic Lieven, one of Hari's closest friends and a fellow-specialist on Russian history. Hari and Dominic were friends since their undergraduate days (1970–1973) at Christ’s College, Cambridge. Professor Lieven is currently a Fellow of the British Academy, an Honorary Fellow and an Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College (Cambridge), and an Honorary Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The lecture titled “The Emperor in World History” is based on Professor Lieven’s forthcoming book, Close to Heaven: The Emperor in Word History. The event was hosted by the Department of History, Calcutta University, and was chaired by Hari's friend and colleague, Professor Bhaskar Chakrabarty.
